Out of control image makes screaming scopes and purchasing royalty free video backgrounds a risk. To get a better view of our competition, we placed some of their video backgrounds on our timeline. Using Adobe Premiere CS3, we scoped out these backgrounds and were suprized at what we saw.
The image above shows the 4 major video scopes editors use when producing for broadcast television. The scopes above are displaying the luminance and saturation from a well known competitor's background. The luminance is legal, but, there is a problem with the reds and yellows. This isn't anything to be overly worried about, but, any professional editor producing for broadcast would need to proc this image down in the area of saturation. Notice the scope on the lower right, the RGB Parade shows the red spectrum hitting the top of the scale and clipping out within the reds and yellows. This would be visible and could also cause color bleeding, ringing or distortion when dubbed, processed and broadcasted.
The second set of scopes here shows another video background from a highly visible competitor's collection. This is a horrific display! Notice the RGB Parade in the lower right which shows a completely illegal image. This image is NOT acceptable for broadcast and we couldn't successfully proc the image down. When doing so, we lost the integrity of the background's image all together. This shows a lack of experience in production for video of any kind. There are far too many inexperienced people producing for broadcast video out there today, and you must be careful when making decisions on purchasing royalty free media for your production. On top of illegal images from these two competitors, we failed to get a perfect loop out of their so-called looping backgrounds. The first background above contained a looping error that came from improper processing. The lower second background contained an error in looping that was within the background's elements! They may say it loops, but watch out, as we found here - these backgrounds did NOT loop. You will never get images like this from Hypereye. Yes, I must admit that some of our earlier volumes of backgrounds do contain illegal luminance and saturation. Today, all of our current volumes are "Commercial Grade" and "Broadcast Ready" in following the guidlines set forth by the NTSC. You can trust Hypereye, the only royalty free media producer offering more than 20 years of hands-on, practical broadcast video production experience. If you have any questions on this subject, email
